Jack Frost

Last night Jack Frost flew over our area while I slept all snuggly and warm with my purring cat Bitty and the electric blanket. I awoke to bright blue skies; no clouds in site. I bundled up and prepared for my daily walk.
And as I walked the quiet side walks on my normal route , the leaves of the pepper trees, still bright red from the Autumn change drifted quietly to the ground and birds chirped as they pecked at the red and green pepper berries that still hang on the branches. The sun felt so wonderful on my face after many days of gray and gloom. But the most spectacular site also came with the suns rays.....EVERYTHING was glistening as if covered in fine diamond dust or that sparkling sugar one uses on holiday cookies. I just had to stop and take a photo with my phone , it was all so magical looking!
Look how this leaf looks as if it has been dipped in egg whites and coated with sugar, just like the fancy sugar plums you read about in children's books this time of year.

Day's like this are some of my favorite ! Clear, cool and crisp. I adore wearing sweaters , and all the winter gear and though only in the low 40's it feels perfect with the sun beating down on me. Mornings such as these are perfect as I wake without pain since the electric blanket warms the muscles and eases the stiffness. It often will take my entire walk before reality sets in. This was such a morning and I reveled in it! I allowed my mind to wonder, to dream, to hope. I had my normal "Thanks for this" time with God and just embraced life as it was that very moment. A single snap shot of time. I had more bounce to my step and nearly wanted to whistle a tune. I arrived at the gas station, having finally filled up the coffee card once more ( takes longer now as I only go once a week) and got a fresh, hot cup of coffee and finished my walk. When I arrived home the UPS man knocked on my door and handed me a gift that a new friend had sent...something to try to help look at life in a more positive way and maybe help change things for the better. It warmed my heart to have such a gesture happen, and I do love mail and packages. Before I knew it, it was time for my middle daughter Rebecca to come for a visit and she had brought me one of her pieces of art. I can hardly wait to hang it in my office area. We talked of life, we talked of hopes and dreams and things that can not be changed. Simply enjoying a conversation over a hot cup of tea. Day's like this are ones I hold dear. So simple, but in that simplicity so blissful.

Since "Jack" was on my mind, I thought I would share a poem I found. I do hope you will enjoy!

The Frost looked forth one still, clear night,
And whispered, “Now I shall be out of sight;
So, through the valley, and over the height,
In silence I’ll take my way.
I will not go on like that blustering train,
The wind and the snow, the hail and the rain,
That make such a bustle and noise in vain,
But I’ll be as busy as they!”
So he flew to the mountain, and powdered its crest;
He lit on the trees, and their boughs he drest
With diamonds and pearls; and over the breast
Of the quivering lake he spread
A coat of mail, that it need not fear
The downward point of many a spear
That he hung on its margin, far and near,
Where a rock could rear its head.
He went to the windows of those who slept,
And over each pane, like a fairy, crept;
Wherever he breathed, wherever he stepped,
By the light of the morn were seen
Most beautiful things; there were flowers and trees;
There were bevies of birds and swarms of bees;
There were cities with temples and towers; and these
All pictured in silvery sheen!
But he did one thing that was hardly fair–
He peeped in the cupboard, and finding there
That all had forgotten for him to prepare–
“Now, just to set them a-thinking,
I’ll bite this basket of fruit,” said he,
“This costly pitcher I’ll burst in three;
And the glass of water they’ve left for me
Shall ‘tchick’ to tell them I’m drinking!”

  1. Thank you for helping me to remember the pleasures of cold weather. Living where it's frigid and dark, non-stop, from November-March, I sometimes get a little, um... jaded. Negative. Prone to spontaneous outbursts of profanity. But you're right -- it can be beautiful! Especially with warm sweaters, blankets, and cats. :)
